Interview

Channel 5 - Pepsi Chart Show:

Following the success of their 'Homework’ EP last year, London based four-piece Straw are set to release their first single 'Sailing Off the Edge of the World' and have just completed tours with Reef and Toploader. We caught up with Duck and Mattie to see what they're all about. Remember, Straw can be seen live on the next Pepsi Chart!

Why are you called Duck?
I made up this story that my parents were hippies so that's why I'm called Duck but it was because my sister had a big bum and she was called Duck so I was little Duck when I was younger.
Tell us about your new single, Sailing Off The Edge Of The World.
Duck: It's 3 mins 47 seconds long and it's really good! Mattie wrote it.
Mattie: I wrote it in about 12 minutes and we recorded it in about three hours. It's on the album Keepsakes.
What's the album about?
M: It's about being in prison, in a car crash, being invisible and it's about 17th century war problems. They're the main topics!
D: It's quite light!
What was it like touring with Toploader and Reef last year?
D: Really good! We had a really good crowd and we got to play to a huge audience. We got crowds of up to 2,000 a night.
Who were better - Reef or Toploader?
M: Reef were better live, but both were really good drinking buddies. They're all really good guys.
D: I thought Joe from Toploader had his hair chopped off one day and I was like "no". He didn't though; it was tied back.
M: But we did beat Reef at football.
How would you describe your music?
D: Really good!
M: It's so hard to describe. It's like describing yourself or your girlfriend so you'd say you really, really like her. We're P-Rock - or better still, roll!
What's better - true love or a No.1 hit?
M: True Love
D: A No. 1 hit.
Did you get any Valentine's Day cards?
M: My girlfriend made me a really nice card - a silhouette of us and our dog on a hill.
D: I didn't get one but I got a text message from my mum. Actually I didn't!
M: When I was 18 I got 67 Valentines cards as I went to an all-girls school.
If you could be invisible for the day what would you do?
D: I'd go to a naked lady bank!
Who are the most famous people you've ever met?
M: Michelle Gayle and Popstars. Oh and Christian from A1.
Who is your favourite Popstar from the series?
D: Suzanne is quite cute.
M: Danny, because he's humble and I like that.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to get into the music biz?
D: Give up now!
What's the best advice you've been given?
M: Clean your teeth, change your pants and ring your mum everyday.
