Gig Review - 4/9/00 - Fleece & Firkin, Bristol

Straw Tour Diary (from official site):

First night down - nine to go. Without blowing our own trumpets it was pretty good as first nights go. Me, Duck and Andy have all lived in Bristol for a bit so it was a great place to kick off.
Haven't been gigging for months so being back on stage was a buzz. Feels like being in a band again! Beforehand was pretty chilled backstage, even for a first night It's not scary anymore - in fact it's good fun to get up and see what happens. And so far, no disasters...
Most asked question before the gig: "What if just three people and a dog turn up?" So we were pleasantly surprised to see the hall filling up and it was great to see people there who'd caught us last year. Hopefully you're doing something right when you see familiar faces in the audience. It was a pretty partisan crowd - I was expecting loads of old dudes but it was a good mix of kids going for it down the front and blokes propping up the bar. I reckon we gave them a good show. There's definitely a much more organic feel to our stuff this time round. We're playing with a bass now instead of sequencers - working with machines was too rigid, they can't keep up if you deviate. Hopefully we're sounding better and tighter.
Highlight of the show had to be Duck's impromptu rendition of Axel F. According to him "It just came out" - luckily the crowd loved it and it got a big round of applause. Could become a permanent fixture...
After-show involved beers and some champagne the record company sent down for us. All very glamorous and it made us feel like proper rock 'n' rollers. Sadly had to drive back to London so ended up in the van watching a video of Graham Taylor's England management skills. Not so glamorous. Got in about 4am in time for a few hours kip before doing it all again.

Cheers
Mattie
